The life of a female porn star can be a strange one.
Not only are they recognisable to a section of society who have watched their scenes, they've also seen them do some of the most intimate things possible.
Once they quit their line of work though, they can often be treated like outcasts or with resentment.
The previous line of work and the sentiments surrounding it can linger on, but some have managed to find a way beyond that stigma and have crafted successful careers after the world of pornography.
Here are a few examples.
Jenna Jameson
Arguably one of the most famous porn stars ever, Jameson was a huge star in the 90s and 00s.
In 2003 she showed that she had intentions beyond that field, and published a book How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale.
The autobiography became a best-seller and she has since followed that up with an erotic novel called Sugar, which was published in 2013.
She has also used her fame to appear in several movies, TV shows, music videos and video games including Family Guy and Grand Theft Auto.
Sasha Grey
When she first entered the porn industry Sasha Grey was tipped to be it's next biggest star, but by 21 she had already left it behind.
She is now a successful actress appearing in The Girlfriend Experience and the hit series Entourage.
Grey has also worked as a model and dabbled in the world of music too, providing vocals to a Current 93 album as well as DJ'ing.
The 29-year-old has published two books Neu Sex, a photo book, and the erotic novel, The Juliette Society.
Traci Lords
Lords immediately caused controversy after her debut after it was discovered by authorities that she had underage in a photoshoot..
Despite this troubling fact, her career went from strength to strength, and she appeared in a number of Hollywood movies.
Now 49, her filmography includes movies such as Blade, Cry-Baby and Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
She also released an album in 1995 called 1000 Fires and published her autobiography, Traci Lords: Underneath it All, in 2003.
