Germany won’t relax coronavirus measures before April 19: Merkel

Updated
BERLIN — Germany will not lift its current restrictions against the coronavirus until at least April 19 — a week after Easter Sunday — Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.
"A pandemic knows no holidays," Merkel told reporters by telephone as she continues to work from home.
She urged Germans to stay home and avoid traveling or visiting family in the days ahead, including for Easter celebrations.
The chancellor said that she and federal ministers had decided today to keep restrictions in place over Easter and until at least April 19. The government will reassess the situation in the days after Easter, she said, on the basis of data from the Robert Koch Institute, among others.
"It would be very bad if we lifted the contact restrictions too early and then rowed back again later," Merkel said, adding it was "far too early to think about relaxing the restrictions on [personal] contact."
